Over time, as political winds shifted across the continent, the delta became a contested borderland between the southern Aserai and the northern powers. The Aserai, with their mastery of light infantry and knowledge of desert-to-coast transitions, found the humid air oppressive yet the terrain advantageous for ambushes. It is said that many a Vlandian knight has vanished into the muck here, never to be seen again, swallowed by the very earth they sought to conquer.

In Their Own Story

The fog rolled in thick and gray, swallowing the sun before noon. Elara pulled her cloak tight against the damp chill as she navigated the skiff through a channel no wider than two horses. The reeds whispered secrets in the wind, hiding the eyes of those who watched from the shadows. She knew the Vlandian patrols were close; their heavy boots would sink deep into the mud, slowing them to a crawl while her people moved like ghosts on the water. Here, in the belly of the Black River, the strongest sword was useless if you could not find your footing.
